Now, I’m not someone who usually goes for all this player versus player action, and pretty much steered clear of it all (except when necessary) in something like World of Warcraft, but for Modern Warfare 2, that is pretty much the only thing I have done. So I have to give a massive round of applause to Infinity Ward for making love this aspect, as it is entirely down to every minor and major design choice they have made.
However, something Infinity Ward haven’t had control over, is the players online…and, dear god do they just make your brain bleed sometimes.
Now, with first person shooters online you get the occasional teabagging incident, perhaps an overzealous grenadier and these often bring about much rage from the vocal players online. However, the most hated of all, the camper. Now, I really couldn’t give a monkeys about this act, as it makes sense, and for the most part the level design works enough that you can’t grief with this tactic. Others, aren’t as forgiving:
Player #1: Oh my god, that guy is still camping! Look at that, 29 kills, 0 deaths. What a loser! I have 12 deaths and 0 kills, this is just stupid.
Me: Really? Because I thought that was a tactic, should they put their guns down, drop their pants and run about in the center? Yeah, I hear that’s an awesome tactic.
See? Truly amazing. However, it got better in the post-game lobby…
Player #1: Hey camper, well done on that level, maybe next time learn to play.
Player #2: Alright, whatever.
(It was at this point, a revelation occurred, from hearing the ‘camper’ speak)
Player #1: Oh my god, you’re a girl?
Player #2: Yeah…
Player #1: A girl…on xbox live? How sad are you? Get a life!
Me: Erm, you know you’re on xbox too, right? Not sure if you noticed.
Yeah, I’ll cut out any transcription of the next half hour, but if you want to guess at it, simply right down every profanity you know, and randomly drop my gamertag between them.

Oh how I love the players on Live. I’m not sure what game types you have been playing, but Josh and I have found Ground War to be a bit more bareable. Mainly because it has larger teams which will allow you to hold a point better and it makes flanking a bit more difficult, but also much more rewarding when done properly. It switches between domination and team deathmatch which can be both a good thing and bad thing depending on the map. The only good comment I have for domination is that it gives a purpose for “tactical camping”.

It could be worse, the players could have been drunk and singing.

Just be glad that they made it easy to mute other players.

They always call me out for camping. Big mothereffin’ deal, I can’t believe these gamers can’t get over it. I mean, if you’re so good, then one stationary player wouldn’t be much of a problem, right?
Even when they know my exact spot, they rarely kill me.

Usually if someone is camping and you know where they are, you can probably get a grenade in without them seeing you.
It’s fairly balanced like that.
